Mathematics

The mathematics major, grounded in the liberal arts tradition, prepares students with the critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and organizational skills necessary to succeed in numerous vocations.  Concordia math majors and minors are prevalent in business, government, and education and have had great success in medical and law school.  Our major was designed to give students a well-rounded perspective of both modern and classical mathematics.  Students will be introduced to a number of technologies and applications to modern problems.  These technologies include a computer algebra system, geometric modeling software, spreadsheets and a computer programming language.  At the same time, math majors investigate the roots of mathematics, develop the theory of the subject, and solve classic problems to better understand the themes.  There are many excellent internship and research opportunities for motivated students.  Hardworking students will have sufficient preparation for graduate programs in mathematics or statistics, as well as a number of pre-professional programs.  The Math and Education departments together provide math teaching licensure.  Alternatively, students are prepared to immediately enter the workforce in a variety of fields.

The department encourages students to be active in mathematics outside of the classroom.  We invite math majors to participate in state and national math conferences which expose them to graduate school, research opportunities, and potential occupations.  Students are invited to present individual or group projects from classes, summer experiences, or independent research.  They may also take advantage of the National Science Foundation sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates at college campuses nationwide.  The Tri-Pi Math Club hosts several campus events including the Homecoming Dodgeball tournament, our annual Game Night, and a math bowl competition for local high school students.

Concordia Mathematics graduates have obtained rewarding careers in business, industry, government, and education.
