Hmong Studies Minor

The minor in Hmong studies at Concordia offers undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the culture, history and language of the Hmong people throughout the world.  The minor is a good way to apply methods or ways of thinking from one's major to a particular part of the world, and can allow students to use the region of Asia as well as the Hmong as a case for work in their primary discipline.

A minor in Hmong Studies will also provide a unique opportunity for students to augment their knowledge, language skills and cross-cultural expertise in a region and a community that is of strategic and global importance.  Students who minor in Hmong Studies will be encouraged to participate in any of several different field studies as well as study tours to gain first-hand experiences in the region of Asia and the Hmong community.

Concordia is home to the Center for Hmong Studies, the Hmong Archives and the Hmong American Institute for Learning, which publishes the literary journal, "Paj Ntaub Voice".  There are more than 100,000 books, videos and artifacts relating to the Hmong people at the Center for Hmong Studies.  For more information on the Center, visit www.csp.edu/hmongcenter.  These resources are available to Concordia students for their reference and research needs.  In addition, the Center for Hmong Studies holds a biennial International Conference on Hmong Studies to provide opportunities for Hmong scholars to present their research.  This provides a tremendous opportunity for students to interact with Hmong scholars from throughout the world, to learn more about the field of Hmong Studies and to contribute to this growing field.

This minor helps to prepare students for graduate work in the humanities, social sciences, arts, as well as careers in business, government policy, and international affairs.
