"Concordia University offers many rich opportunities to its students from all backgrounds and cultures."
Dr. Cheryl Chatman firmly believes that Concordia University affords every student wonderful and challenging opportunities to receive a quality education, explore new interests and adventures, and experience uniqueness and community. Funmi, a student who has become friends with Dr. Chatman, agrees.
Funmi has served as Secretary of the Student Senate, Vice President of the United Minds of Joint Action group and a peer advisor for freshman and transfer students. She also played on Concordia's nationally ranked volleyball team.
Christian schools have been a part of Funmi's education since she was little and living in Nigeria. She found a welcoming home at Concordia University and became involved in a number of different organizations and activities, including serving as a mentor for an after-school program called Youth Express and as a teacher aide at Hazel Park Academy for a summer school program.
As Executive Vice President and Dean of Diversity, enhancing the unity in community comes naturally for Dr. Cheryl Chatman. As part of her work, she seeks avenues to encourage the Concordia University family to have meaningful dialogue, interact and relate to others from varying cultures and backgrounds, and to enthusiastically acknowledge and celebrate all commonalities and differences.
Her work encompasses Concordia's mission to "prepare students for thoughtful and informed living, for dedicated service to God and humanity, and for the enlightened care of God's creation, all within the context of the Christian Gospel."
