Dane
Majors: Mathematics and Biology BA '05

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

As much as football is a part of Dane's life, math and science are an even bigger part. Recruited out of high school to play football at Concordia, he received both academic and athletic scholarships to attend the University.

"The players and coaches have a relationship that you find only with a family, and that is what we are. They became family away from home."

The recruiting didn't end with football, however. As a graduate of Concordia University he was recruited by several graduate schools for their academic programs and chose to accept a fellowship at the University of Utah. The program that he will enter is called IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) and aims to teach graduate students how to use the tools of mathematics to study the difficult problems of modern biology.

Dane prepared for his post-college work by serving an internship with the Institute of Biosciences Research, which is located on Concordia's campus. His work focused on different types of cancer research, including cervical cancer and breast cancer.

This work with Concordia's science faculty helped Dane get into the IGERT program.

"The best things about Concordia are the small classroom environment, the availability of help if you need it, and the interaction with faculty and not teaching assistants."
