Art Department Majors and Minors
There are four majors offered by the Concordia Art Department. Our broad program offerings connect students to specific careers such as design or education, or to areas of thought and exploration that are open-ended. Some students in our programs land internships or continue on to graduate school and all of them make connections to people in the arts community that can shape an unexpected and fulfilling future. Personalized majors that meet your interest can also be created in consultation with professors. ART STUDIO MAJOR This is a fine arts major for students who love to create art. We teach necessary skills from a very beginning level all the way through contemporary theories of 21st century art making. Students with this major can take many varied career directions. ART EDUCATION MAJOR This major prepares and licenses a student to teach K-12 Art in Minnesota and beyond. Students develop talents in a variety of art media as well as methods and techniques for effective teaching. Art education is not a default career but is for students who truly wish to become excellent educators. Art Education Major Forms
COMMUNITY ARTS A unique major, Concordia developed the second major of this type in the country. It combines arts fields and sociology/social justice concepts to help students understand how to use the arts to foster community development. As part of this major, students partake in internships with non-profit arts organizations. DESIGN MAJOR & DIGITAL DESIGN MINOR This is our newest major and is an extremely flexible degree used to prepare students for many varied careers in the commercial or applied arts world. Combining basic design and digital art making knowledge with specific learning opportunities in the greater Twin Cities community, students can focus on their areas of interest. ART HISTORY MINOR There is true value in having knowledge of historical traditions no matter which art field a student pursues. Teachers should be able to teach about the discipline of art and creators of art use the wealth of visual vocabulary from the past to find their own creative voice. Art History Minor Form
BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION Concordia University has an articulated agreement with the St. Paul Como Conservatory to offer a Botanical Illustration Certificate for university credit. Botanical Illustration, or any other illustration field, like Medical Illustration, is a high demand career opportunity. Botanical Illustration Certificate Form
