Bears Split on Day Two of NSIC Crossover

Apr. 10– Golden Bear softball finished the NSIC Crossover with a strong 4-1 mark in the five game series to open Northern Sun play. On day two, Concordia (17-11, 4-1 NSIC) recorded a split with a 10-2 win in five innings over Bemidji State before a 12-3 loss in five innings to MSU Moorhead.

In game one, Concordia scored their 10 runs on just 11 hits, showing efficiency on the bases with just two extra base hits - doubles by Natalie Mast and Amanda Yurek. They also swiped three bases with two from Anna Bjorlin and Mast nabbing her 20th of the year.

Of Concordia's 11 hits, 10 came from the 1-5 spots in the batting order as Yurek and Mallory Olson each went 3-3. Yurek drove in three runs while M.Olson had a pair. They each score once. Bjorlin went 2-3 with three runs and an RBI out of the leadoff spot while Mast followed her in the order with a 2-4 with three RBI and two runs.

The four players finished a combined 10-13 with seven runs and nine RBI.

Jenny Kaminski cruised to her tenth victory, improving to 10-3 on the year with a complete game (five innings), allowing two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

In the second game, Concordia continued their potent offense with two first inning runs. But the bats were started to freeze over as the Dragons got hot.

MSU Moorhead scored one in the third and three in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

Then they blew the game open in the fifth with an eight run inning courtesy of three Concordia errors. All eight Moorhead runs were unearned in an inning that sealed Concordia's fate.

The Bears rallied for one more in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough to keep the game alive as the Dragons pulled off the only win over Concordia in the crossover.

Abby Brundidge continued her solid crossover with a 2-3 effort with a pair of RBI. Mast was 1-3 with a double, run and RBI and Bjorlin went 2-3 with two runs.

Starting pitcher Mandy Turba took the loss, falling to 7-8. A hard luck loss for the senior hurler who allowed all 12 runs in a complete game, but only four of the 12 were earned. Turba struck out six Dragons in her five innings of work.

The Bears scheduled doubleheader against Wayne State tomorrow afternoon has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Concordia returns to action on Friday when they host a 6:00 doubleheader against Winona State before they host the Concordia Tournament this Saturday and Sunday - all at Dunning Softball Complex.
