Apr. 19– Concordia head softball coach Bob Bartel has announced Stephanie Schmikla, of Madison, Wisconsin, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for the Bears in 2008.
Schmikla, a pitcher from McFarland High School was the 2006 Wisconsin Division II Player of the Years and was an all-state selection as a sophomore and junior. She led her team to the 2006 conference championship and a state final four appearance, posting a 22-2 record. Schmikla recorded 277 strikeouts, against only 24 walks with a 0.49 ERA in 2006 as a junior. As a sohomore, she was 17-5 with 12 shutouts and a 0.51 ERA with 266 strikeouts.
Also a letterwinner in basketball and volleyball, Schmikla is a three-time all-conference selection in volleyball and softball and honorable mention all-conference in basketball as a senior. She was named the Fox Sports Network Athlete of the Month in May.
She is a member of the National Honor Society, band, and is a math tutor.
Schmikla joins Mollie Lenzi, a senior from Cretin-Derham Hall, who committed to Concordia earlier in the week. They will join a Golden Bears team that has played in three straight NCAA Regional Tournaments.
