Wayne State Takes Two From Golden Bears in NSIC Action

Apr. 22– The Wildcats of Wayne State (28-18, 12-6 NSIC) took a pair of NSIC games from Concordia (24-17, 11-5 NSIC) Tuesday afternoon in Wayne, NE.  Concordia dropped game one 3-2 and were shutout 6-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Game 1 - Wayne State 3, Concordia 2
Concordia's Natalie Mast (Jr., Oakdale, MN) led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a single to left field by Anna Bjorlin (So., Hermantown, MN).  Mast was forced out at third on a fielder's choice by Abby Brundidge (So., Nekoosa, WI) and the Golden Bears stranded two in the first inning.

Wayne State took advantage of the Golden Bears inability to score in the first inning, by putting two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning on three singles and a walk off of Concordia starting pitcher Stephanie Schmikla (Fr., Madison, WI).

They would extend the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second three more singles and a walk.

Concordia put together a rally in the top of the sixth inning on a one out walk by Bjorlin.  She advanced to second on a single to left field by Brundidge.  With two outs, Sami Mattson (So., Esko, MN) doubled to left field.  Mattson however would be stranded at second when Nikki Scherr (So., Stewartville, MN) hit into a inning ending play to the shortshot.

Wayne State scored their three runs on nine hits and four walks off of Schmikla.  Schmikla finished with two strikouts.

The Golden Bears managed just four hits in the game and would leave four runners stranded in the game.

Game 2 - Wayne State 6, Concordia 0
Smai Mattson recorded the Golden Bears first hit of the game in the second inning and Concordia would add only three more hits in the game.

The Golden Bears stranded eight runners through the final six innings as Wayne State combined to shut out Concordia for just the sixth time this season.

The Wildcats scattered eight hits off of Concordia starting pitcher Cassye McMahon (Fr., Rescue, CA).  McMahon allowed six runs, only three earned with three walks and three strikeouts.

The Golden Bears defense struggled in game two committing five errors.

Concordia will return to action on Thursday, Apr. 24th when NSIC regular-season champions Southwest Minnesota State comes to Dunning Field at 3:00.  The Mustangs secured the regular-season title tonight with the Golden Bears losses.
