LaViolette Finishes 2006-07 as NCAA Assist Leader

May. 01Solidifying herself as arguably the nation's elite point guard, junior Katie LaViolette (Manitowoc, Wis.) finished the 2006-07 season as the NCAA assist leader as her 9.3 assists per game were not only first in NCAA Division II but were also higher than any NCAA Division I or III averages giving her the assist title for all division in NCAA. Her 297 assists on the season, just 12 shy of the Division II record, ranks fourth in NCAA Div. II history. The 9.3 average is tied for 15th all-time.

LaViolette finished 0.1 assists ahead of Lisa Perry of West Liberty State who had 284 assists in 31 games for a 9.2 average. The two players were battling for the Division II lead down the stretch. The Division I leader was Amanda Rego of San Diego with a 7.7 average and the Division III leader was Symbri Tuttle of McMurry with a 7.9 average.

LaViolette was the catalyst for the Golden Bears as they turned around from a 2-7 start to finish the regular season as NSIC Champions with a 15-3 league mark. During NSIC games, LaViolette's 159 assists shattered the Northern Sun record.

She continued that record setting trend in the NSIC Tournament, where she dished out an NSIC Tournament record average of 13.0 assists as she led the Bears to the tournament championship. She was named the NSIC Tournament MVP as she also scored 15.7 points per game during the tournament run.

Her electrifying play didn't stop after the conference tournament as she led the sixth-seeded Bears to a first round upset over the third seed and No. 21-ranked South Dakota before falling in the regional semifinals to Nebraska-Kearney. In the NCAA Tournament, LaViolette doled out 28 more assists (14.0 apg) while averaging 22.0 points. She was a perfect 11-11 at the free throw line and shot 57.7% from the floor and was named to the NCAA North Central Region All-Tournament team.

The captain from Manitowoc, Wis. set Concordia's single-season (297) and career assist records (513). She had at least 10 assists in 13 games with a career-high 17 in the first round win over South Dakota in the NCAA Tournament.

Her most impressive average this season, however, was her 4.0 grade point average which earned her a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team - the only player from the NSIC to be recognized as an academic all-American.

She also averaged 12.2 points and 4.2 rebounds and led Concordia to win 20 of 23 games down the stretch to finish 22-10.
