May. 11– Concordia University was honored with four first team and two second team selections while senior Matt Borman was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Year, as voted on by the coaches from the Northern Sun. The first team selections were Borman (P, OF), Jake Waldman (2B) and Andy Judkins (OF). The second team selections were Greg Winegarden (Utility) and Brenden Furrow (DH).
Borman, Concordia's leadoff hitter, center fielder and top pitcher, ranks second in the nation in runs per game, ninth in RBI per game, 12th in home runs per game, 14th in slugging pct., 49th in average and 81st in wins. Borman is hitting .422 with a .506 on base pct. and a .789 slugging pct. He is the new home run king for the Bears with school records of 14 this season and 33 for his career. He also set the single season record for runs with 60 and tied the season RBI record with 56. He also has stolen 12 of 14 bases. On the mound, Borman is 7-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 11 starts and 13 appearances. In his 53.1 innings, Borman has registered 35 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .219 average and one home run in 196 at bats.
Waldman is hitting .338 and has great power at the second base position. Waldman has socked nine home runs and ten doubles with 35 RBI and a .593 slugging pct. He has compiled a .437 on base pct., is 8-8 on stolen bases which have led to 50 runs scored, ranking 39th in the nation in runs per game.
Judkins has kept his average above .400 nearly the entire season in 2007 and is currently hitting .414. Battling injuries throughout 2007, Judkins has appeared in 33 games and is 41-99 on the year. He has driven 11 doubles, two triples and five home runs for a .717 sluggling pct. His slugging pct. ranks 36th in the nation and his average is 61st. Judkins has 39 RBI and scored 25 runs.
Winegarden, who earned all-conference honors at the utility position, serves as Concordia's starting catcher while also seeing plenty of action at shortstop. He leads the Bears and is 24th in the nation in hitting, currently with a .425 average. He also leads the team with a .522 on base pct. and is third on the team with 40 runs.
In his first season with the Bears, Furrow is hitting .369 while posting a .417 on base pct. and a .514 slugging pct. He has eight doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs. He has 23 RBI and 22 runs.
The five players have led Concordia to a 30-11 overall record, establishing a new school record for wins in a season, breaking the previous highs of 29 set the last two years. The Bears are currently competing in the NSIC Tournament, facing Winona State this afternoon in the second round.
