Bears Close Season with School Record 30 Wins in 2007

May. 16– Establishing a winning tradition on the diamond, the 2007 Concordia University baseball team finished the season with a school record in victories for the third consecutive season under head coach Mark "Lunch" McKenzie. The Bears finished 30-13 overall, breaking the previous mark of 29 wins set in each of the last two years (29-12 in 2005, 29-12-1 in 2006).

The Bears finished the regular season in fourth in the NSIC with a 15-7 record, just narrowly behind second place Winona State who owned a 15-5 league mark and third place SW Minnesota State with a 17-7 record. Even more impressive was that Concordia stormed into the NSIC Tournament, taking three of four at Upper Iowa on the last weekend of the season to surpass the Peacocks to earn the fourth seed in the four-team field.

The Bears went on a streak winning 12 of 13 games before dropping their last two in the postseason. During that span, the Bears were led by the NSIC Pitcher of the Year and all-NSIC pitcher/outfielder Matt Borman, who gave them a power surge at the plate. The senior leadoff hitter hit .413 for the season with school records of 14 home runs, 61 runs, 58 RBI and 64 hits. He also set the career home run record with 33 in his three seasons with the Bears, breaking Erik Quarberg's mark of 32 set last season.

As a team, the Bears ranked second in the league and 16th in NCAA Division II out of 217 teams with a .346 team batting average. They slugged 43 home runs in 43 games, ranking 29th in the nation and second in the conference while their .698 overall winning pct. was 33rd in the nation. The Bears also ranked 33rd in the nation in scoring (8.0 runs per game), 26th in slugging pct. (.515) and had 12 individuals ranked in the NCAA Division II top-100 in nine different pitching and hitting categories.
