Golden Bears Outlast St. Olaf in Exhibition Opener
Nov. 03– Concordia-St. Paul opened up their exhibition season with a 73-68 victory over St. Olaf College on Saturday evening at the Gangelhoff Center. Matt Cadwell, a junior transfer from Division I South Dakota State, scored a game-high 23 points and dished out five assists for the victorious Golden Bears.
Concordia opened up the game with a 48-40 halftime lead behind 63.3% (19-30) shooting from the field and 46.2% (6-13) from three-point range.
Sophomore Craig Heiman was on fire in the first half with 18 points on 7-8 shooting and 4-4 three-pointers. Heiman would finish 7-13 from the floor with five rebounds.
Concordia struggled to score in the second half, going nearly nine minutes without scoring as their 54-46 lead turned into a 56-54 St. Olaf lead until Mike Cunningham drove through the line to tie the score at 56.
Cunningham finished 5-6 from the field, scored 11 points and had five rebounds (four offensive).
Senior center Chuol Chany notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 5-7 from the floor and had three steals.
The Golden Bears shot just 34.8% (8-23) in the second half but were just 11.1% (1-9) from three-point range. St. Olaf outscored the Golden Bears 28-25 in the second half but Concordia executed down the stretch to seal the win.
For the game, the Golden Bears shot 50.9% (27-53) from the floor.
Concordia continues their exhibition season next Saturday, November 10 when they host St. John's (MN) at 3:00 p.m.
