Welcome to the Department of Biology
Biology Major Ariel Gittens Chosen as a McNair Scholar
The Mcnair Scholars program is a program devoted to the advancement of minority, first generation college students, and under represented people in the pursuit of their PhD. The program accepts anywhere from twenty to twenty five students. The program lasts about six weeks and scholars accepted into the program will work under the guidance of a mentor on a research project of their choice. Their are two research tracks in the program the first the Academic internship track where you will work under the guidance of a mentor on an already existing research plan. The second research track is the Research internship track where you will conduct your own research and have the ability to take a graduate class that will offer your four graduate credits upon completion. During this research experience all students in the program will receive free GRE training and attend graduate school seminars. Throughout the program you must also attend two scholarly conferences and present at one scholarly conference that you attend.
You are also given a travel stipend to travel to one graduate school of your choice for a chance to visit the graduate program you are interested in and meet with a graduate professor in the aforementioned program. When you apply for graduate schools it is also possible to have part of the graduate school application fee waived. This program is a great opportunity for anyone interested in attending graduate school.
Scholars at the Capital: Concordia University biology professor Shellie Kieke and students Alex Hutton and Kelsey Walt presented their poster at the 2009 Scholars at the Capitol event sponsored by the Minnesota's Private Colleges. The title of their poster was Testing for HPV-18 E6 mRNA in Human Breast Cancer Cell Lines. The research was completed as students in the BIO456 research course taught every spring semester. Note: Zach Riggins, who also worked on this poster, was unable to attend.
We have many other exciting opportunities for you to explore. Find out more!
