Welcome to the Department of the Child and Family Studies.  As learners in the department you bring a wealth of information and practical experience in the fields of Family and Early Childhood Education to your cohort.

Our current learners work in such roles as teachers of young children, social service professionals, directors and center owners, trainers and curriculum specialists, Head Start teachers and assistants, staff development leaders, community college instructors, parent educators, youth group directors, military family support specialists, pre-marital educators, and many other roles that serve families and children.

You also bring a desire to demonstrate your professional knowledge, to gather new strategies and information in order to inform your practice, to work collaboratively as members of a team, to serve as a mentor to others, to take leadership roles in your professional setting, and to apply theory to practice. We appreciate the diversity in experience, expertise, and knowledge each learner brings to the programs and encourage you to contribute to the learning of all by sharing your experiences.

The faculty in the Department of Child and Family Studies are experienced practitioners who understand the fields of family life and early childhood education. Their experience includes teaching at the birth-kindergarten 3 level, working as family life educators, directing programs and schools, serving as professional church workers in educational and parish settings, and practicing as marriage and family therapists. This faculty experience brings a breadth of knowledge and practice that enables each instructor to mentor and facilitate learning with a focus on real-life solutions to real-life problems informed by theory and research.

We anticipate that you will enjoy your work in the program you’ve chosen.  In addition, if you are a Minnesota resident and interested in coming to campus to complete either the parent education licensure or birth-grade 3 licensure, we can provide information for you.  Selected coursework in either your BA or MA program can fulfill requirements for licensure with just a handful of coursework remaining.  That coursework is available in evening and summer courses.
