Frequently Asked Questions

How can teaching HMong children using their first (native) language help them acquire their second language (English)?

One might think the more English these children hear and read, the faster they will acquire it. This is not so. When we give them supportive education in their first language, they get two things: knowledge and literacy. Both the knowledge and the literacy they develop in the first language help English language development enormously. The effect is indirect, but powerful! Research by Kellerman and Sharwood Smith suggest that cross-linguistic influence is stronger when second language learners have mastered their first language. Therefore, there appears to be a foundational need for youngsters to develop a strong tie to their cultural roots and language, as a means to develop their connectedness, their competence, their contribution to the community and their success in education.

Goals and Objectives for the HMong Culture and Language Program

  •  Preserve HMong oral and written language through the use of  curriculum focused on  HMong culture and customs.
  •  Develop fluency in language as a foundation for second language acquisition.
  • Preserve HMong culture through presentations and teachings by HMong leaders, teachers and community members.
  • Enhance intergenerational experiences by inviting HMong family members to participate.
  • Provide service learning opportunities for Concordia University Teacher Education students by having them participate in language, gardening, cooking and art experiences with HMong children in the program.

How will the HMong Culture and Language Program benefit the community?

The program will benefit the community by:

  • Building strong intergenerational bonds, dignity and connectedness through interactions with elders, community organization members and Concordia teacher education students.
  • Strengthening youth's competency in understanding, speaking and writing their language as a basis for effective learning of English.
  • Preparing children to excel academically, by helping them build strong language and literacy skills.
  • Preparing students to focus on higher education, perhaps with a career in education through the modeling of Concordia University staff and students.
  • Preparing students to be successful, contributing community members through their partnerships with older students and community members.
