Sport Psychology Track

Sport psychology is a sub-discipline of Kinesiology at Concordia University, St. Paul.

Sport psychology studies behaviors of performers such as athletes and exercisers to determine how their behaviors affect their performances. Common behaviors studied within sport psychology include:

  • Personality
  • Motivation
  • Aggression
  • Anxiety and Stress
  • Group Dynamics and Cohesion
  • Leadership
  • Injury
  • Burnout
  • Exercise Adherence

Along with studying behaviors, sport psychology consults also work with athletes and exercisers in an applied setting helping them gain a mental advantage over their opponents. To gain that mental advantage athletes use psychological skills such as:

  • Mental Imagery and Relaxation
  • Focus/Attentional Skills
  • Positive Self-Talk
  • Goal Setting
  • Stress Management

Upon completion of the sport psychology track from Concordia University, St. Paul, students are qualified for graduate programs in sport psychology.

Following a masters and/or doctoral degree, students have the options of teaching, researching and/or working as an applied sport psychology consultant. Other common jobs include working in athletic departments as an academic advisor or life skill advisor, coaching, and working as a health promotion specialist.
