Math Program at Concordia University, St. Paul
The Department of Mathematics offers a number of courses and programs for all levels of mathematical ability and interest.
Liberal Arts Math Programs (College of Arts and Sciences) The Mathematics Major provides students with a strong background in classical and modern mathematics. The objectives of the major are:
- Communicate mathematics effectively.
- Construct a valid mathematical proof.
- Demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills using high-order critical thinking.
- Utilize technology to enhance comprehension of the problem situation and results.
- Link areas of mathematics for greater understanding of key concepts and methods.
Use of technology is a critical component in the curriculum. Students will be introduced to a computer algebra system, geometric modeling software, statistics analysis using spreadsheets, and a computer programming language. Students are able to enhance their learning through internships or undergraduate student research.
The Mathematics Minor enhances any academic major. A study of the Calculus, methods of mathematical proof, and technological tools provides a student with the analytic skills necessary in most professional careers. The Concordia Department of Mathematics has had students obtain math minors who are majoring in art, biology, business, history, kinesiology, psychology, and theology. Math Education Programs (College of Education) Programs are available for Lutheran Education , Public Education, or Post-Baccalaureate Licensure. The department supports the Mathematics Major coupled with the Secondary Teaching License (5-12) and the Elementary Education Major with Middle Level Mathematics Specialty (K-8).

General Education Mathematics The goals of math general education curriculum are to enable students to understand and communicate the mathematics in the world around them, to improve problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and to use the appropriate technology to solve a problem.
Math Assessment All incoming students will take the Math Assessment to help the math department place students in the appropriate math class. This placement allows for the best chance of success in math at Concordia University, St. Paul. Click here for a list of the topics.
