Initial Math Assessment
As a new student entering Concordia University, you will be required to take a 30-minute math assessment on the day of your New Student Orientation. The assessment consists of 24 multiple choice questions evaluating math skills from the list below to be answered without the aid of a calculator. The assessment will be scored immediately and used in conjunction with your transcripts and ACT scores to help the math department decide your eligibility to register for math courses.
Skills List for the Initial Math Assessment
- Add, subtract, multiply, divide and reduce fractions.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimal numbers.
- Simplify expressions using order of operations.
- Identify equivalent forms of simple algebraic expressions
- Simplify square roots and absolute values.
- Solve word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- Evaluate algebraic expressions, given the value of the variables.
- Find the area and perimeter (or circumference) of a triangle, rectangle, or circle.
- Use of the Pythagorean Theorem.
- Given an equation or a graph describing a function, find the value of the function for a given input value.
- Write an equation for a line, given two points on the line or given one point on the line and the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to the line.
- Factor polynomials.
- Simplify algebraic expressions involving negative exponents and/or fractional exponents.
- Given a linear equation, graph the line.
- Solve linear inequalities
- Graph quadratics (parabolas).
- Use the quadratic formula to solve a quadratic equation.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and square polynomials.
- Simplify rational expressions.
- Solve rational equations.
- Solve a system of linear equations.
The purpose of the above list is to give you an idea of what to expect on the initial math assessment. You should use this list to refresh your skills related to topics that you have previously learned.
