Early Childhood Certificate
Children come to us in all different types of shapes, sizes and behaviors. Therefore, it is very important for Early Childhood Professionals to continue educating themselves in order to be more proficient in their line of work.
Students earning this certificate will not only gain insight in the growth and development of children, but will also learn the best practices in early childhood. Additionally, they will study the historical and present role of adults within the field of early childhood educators.
Participants may take one class, to explore a topic, or all the courses in a series to complete a certificate. There are no prerequisites to register for these classes, and students have the option of earning semester college credits or non-credit.
To earn the Early Childhood Certificate, students must successfully complete the following online courses:
CHD310/610 Growth and Development of Children
(4 undergraduate/4 graduate credits)
This is a broad sketch of human growth and development from pre-natal states to elementary age. Developmental processes are studied from a biological and developmental perspective. Personality development and the effects of temperament on learning are discussed.
CHD320/620 Role of Early Childhood Educator
(4 undergraduate/4 graduate credits)
This foundational course discusses the roots of early childhood education and the purposes of early childhood in today?s society. The historical and present role of adults within the field of early childhood will be examined. Learners will explore NAEYC's code of ethics and its implications for the profession.
CHD330/630 Best Practices in Early Childhood
(4 undergraduate/4 graduate credits)
This class provides the theoretical framework and best practices for working in early childhood settings. Learners examine how individualized curriculum and environment can be integrated through developmentally appropriate practices in order to promote the cognitive and social development of children.

CDA
Concordia’s Early Childhood Certificate is 12 undergraduate credits (120 clock hours) of course work that address the 8 content areas for the CDA. The intent of the Early Childhood Certificate is to provide content area knowledge and theory, candidates seeking to achieve CDA credentialing are responsible for completing the coursework (“training”), connecting with a CDA Advisor in their area, submitting the application for assessment, and arranging the visit by a Council member.
