Art Department Majors and Minors

There are four majors offered by the Concordia Art Department. Our broad program offerings connect students to specific careers such as design or education, or to areas of thought and exploration that are open-ended. Some students in our programs land internships or continue on to graduate school and all of them make connections to people in the arts community that can shape an unexpected and fulfilling future. Personalized majors that meet your interest can also be created in consultation with professors.
Majors include Art Studio, Art Education, Community Arts, and Design
Minors include Art Studio, Art History, Botanical Illustration Certificate, Community Arts and Digital Design

ART STUDIO MAJOR
This is a fine arts major for students who love to create art. We teach necessary skills from a very beginning level all the way through contemporary theories of 21st century art making.  Students with this major can take many varied career directions.

COMMUNITY ARTS
A unique major, Concordia developed the second major of this type in the country. It combines arts fields and sociology/social justice concepts to help students understand how to use the arts to foster community development. As part of this major, students partake in internships with non-profit arts organizations. In addition grant writing and legal issues are addressed to help students learn about this important field of public arts.

ART HISTORY MINOR
There is true value in having knowledge of historical traditions no matter which art field a student pursues.  Teachers should be able to teach about the discipline of art and creators of art use the wealth of visual vocabulary from the past to find their own creative voice.
