Joe Abellera hit .500 while slugging .938, going 16-32 with four doubles, two triples and two home runs out of the leadoff spot for the Golden Bears as they went 5-3 to open the season in Ft. Myers, Fla. He scored 12 runs and knocked in 11 while getting on base at a .543 clip. He didn’t commit an error in 14 chances in the field, either. Hitting safely in all eight games to start the year, he narrowly missed the cycle, going 3-5 with a double, triple and home run with five RBI against Wheeling Jesuit. After starting the season with one hit in his first three games, he turned it up a notch by going 13-21 over the final five games including seven extra base hits, all 11 of his RBI and 10 of his runs. He closed out the spring trip with a four hit performance, going 4-5 with three runs and a two-run home run.
