Bears Announce Team Awards at Postseason Team Banquet

Mar. 26

Head Coach Paul Fessler has announced the 2006-07 team awards following the team's postseason banquet. Juniors Katie LaViolette and Amanda Behnke were named Co-Most Valuable Players while Mary Schroeder was named Most Improved, Jessica Tewes earned the Hustle Award and LaViolette picked up the Golden Bear Award.

LaViolette and Behnke formed one of the most potent 1-2 punches in the nation throughout the season.

LaViolette, who broke two CU assist records and two NSIC assist records, finished the season as the NCAA Division II assist champion with 297 assists for a 9.3 average - both tops in NCAA DII. LaViolette also averaged 12.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and was second in the NSIC with 1.8 steals. She scored a career-high 23 points in the final game of the season and scored 65 points in Concordia's final three games.

Behnke was the scoring component on many of those assists, leading the NSIC with a 17.2 scoring average as she shored up NSIC Player of the Year awards and was also an all-region first team selection as well as nabbing a pair of all-America honorable mention honors. She finished with 8.2 rebounds per game and set Concordia's single season scoring record with 551 points.

Schroeder not only was Most Improved for the Golden Bears, she was also the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. She served as the Golden Bears defensive specialist being matched up with her opponent's top offensive wing threat night in and night out. A steady all-around player who does not need to make an impact in the box score to help her team win, Schroeder has led a Concordia defensive attack that shut down Northern Sun foes this season. On the offensive end, Schroeder averaged 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while playing in all 32 games, starting 28.

Tewes was a player who was asked do all the little things in her role off the bench in 2006-07. In 9.1 minutes per game, Tewes was constantly setting tough screens, providing a fierce block out on the rebounding end and playing stellar, physical defense. On offense, when she was in a position to score, she capitalized, hitting 53.6% (15-28) of her field goal attempts while averaging 1.5 points. On the glass, Tewes averaged 2.1 rebounds with 27 of her 65 boards coming on the offensive end. Tewes played in 31 of 32 games, making one start for the Bears.

The team also picked the team captains for the 2007-08 season with the three captains from 06-07 earning repeat honors to hold the positions. Juniors Amanda Behnke, Katie LaViolette and Whitney Smetana will all return in the same role for next season.
