Apr. 16– Concordia University (16-10, 9-6 NSIC) dropped the first game of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader 6-1 at Winona State (15-12, 10-8 NSIC), but held off a late Winona State rally to take game two 6-5 in a pivotal NSIC series in Winona, Minn.
Game One - Winona State 6, Concordia 1 The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Golden Bears only had five hits and drew one walk in the seven inning loss.
Junior Chris Kimpton (Canberra, Aus.) took the loss, pitching four innings while surrendering five runs on 10 hits, striking out three with just one walk. He falls to 0-3 on the season.
Freshman Nick Anderson (Plymouth, Minn.) came in and pitched the final two innings, allowing runs on three hits, striking out one.
Concordia's five hits came from five different players with junior left fielder Jake Schmidt (Oakdale, Minn.) driving in CU's lone run in the top of the fourth, scoring junior right fielder Brenden Furrow (Johnston, Iowa).
That run cut the Warrior lead to 4-1 but they countered with another run in the bottom of the inning.
All of Concordia's five hits were singles.
Game Two - Concordia 6, Winona State 5 Senior Joe Abellera (Minnetonka, MN) led off game two with a walk and with two outs, junior Brenden Furrow hit his fifth home run of the season over the fence in left field to give the Golden Bears their first lead of the day.
The Warriors would get one back in the bottom of the second on a solo shot by Andrew Kes off of junior pitcher Ted Farni (Minnetonka, MN).
Winona State would manufacture another run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the score to 3-2 on a leadoff walk to Ben Smothers. Mike Wendland sacrificed Smothers to second and with two outs, Ronnie Olson hit a single up the middle to score the run.
The Golden Bears jumped ahead 5-2 with three runs in the top of the fifth innning. Sophomore Blake DeVries (Oakdale, MN) reached first on a Warrior error and would score on a single by Jake Waldman (Sr., Minnetonka, MN). Waldman would reach home on junior Chris Herbert's seventh home run of the season.
The Warriors started the bottom of the fifth inning with back-to-back singles off of Farni, who was then replaced by senior Derek Mason (Minnetonka, MN). Mason did his job in the fifth, getting a strikeout and Brent Maxwell to hit into a double play ending the threat.
Concordia would get one more run in the top of the seventh on a leadoff double to centerfield by Mason giving the Golden Bears a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Winona State threatened in the bottom of the seventh getting two walks and a two run double with two outs off Mason, who was replaced by Jake Schmidt.
Schmidt gave up a single to left field to Ronnie Olson, who advanced to second on an error. Schmidt then got Jared Anderson to strikeout swinging to end the game, securing the 6-5 win and the doubleheader split.
Farni pitched five solid innings allowing the two earned runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Mason allowed three earned runs on one hit and two walks over 1.2 innings and Schmidt picked up his first save of the season allowing no runs on one hit.
The Golden Bears scored six runs on six hits, while Winona State finished with five runs on six hits. No Concordia player had more than one hit in the game.
Concordia will now take a week off and will host Minnesota Crookston on April 23rd at Barnes Field on Parent's Day.
