Bulldogs Sweep Bears in Duluth

Apr. 17– Concordia University (18-19) dropped a road doubleheader to Minnesota Duluth (17-14) 5-2 and 8-0 (6 innings) on Tuesday afternoon in Duluth, Minn.

In the first game, the Bears jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Natalie Mast walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. She coasted in to score on Abby Brundidge's RBI single.

But UMD added two in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Bears retied the score with a run in the second. Tiffani Rodd led off the inning with a double and scored when Nikki Scherr picked up an RBI when she reached on an error to third.

The Bulldogs scored two more in the bottom of the inning, however, to take a 4-2 lead and would never look back in the 5-2 win.

Three Bears had two-hit performances: Amanda Yurek, Rodd and Josey Olson.

Mandy Turba picked up the loss, falling to 8-12. She pitched a complete game, going six innings with five runs (three earned) on nine hits.

The second game was much closer than the final score indicated. Minnesota Duluth scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to second base but the two teams would play scoreless ball until the sixth inning when UMD blew up for seven more runs to close out the contest.

Concordia only managed to get a runner into scoring position twice, stranding Melissa Bergdall on third in the third inning and Bergdall again on second base in the fifth.

Bergdall finished 2-2 in game two with a steal while Yurek was 2-3.

Jenny Kaminski was hit with the loss, falling to 10-7 after pitching 5.2 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Bears return to action tomorrow when they take on another North Central Conference opponent that is joining the Northern Sun in 2008-09 as they travel to Mankato to take on Minnesota State University at 3:00.
