May. 05– Concordia University (27-11, 13-7 NSIC) split the first pair of games in a four game set at Upper Iowa University (29-19, 18-9 NSIC). The Bears dropped a tough extra inning affair in the first game, 7-6 in eight innings before using an 11 run fourth inning in a 14-7 win in the second game on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.
Matt Borman started the series in the first game with a leadoff solo home run, picking up where he left off the past eight games. Concordia added two more runs in the third with back-to-back RBI doubles by Andy Judkins and Jake Schmidt to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
The lead was extended to 5-1 as Concordia put up two more in the fifth.
But the Peacocks added five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
Concordia added a run in the seventh when Jake Waldman scored on an error to tie the game at six.
But the Bears went three up three down in the eighth inning and the Peacocks loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and scored on a game winning one out RBI single.
Borman and Judkins each went 2-4 in the game. Borman scored twice and drove in one run and hit his 11th homer. Judkins drove in two and scored once. The double was his 10th of the season.
Borman started and went five innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts with no walks.
After a scoreless inning by Aaron Pfalzgraff, Ted Farni came in and worked 1.1 innings. He didn't allow any hits and walked two. He took the loss despite leaving the game without allowing a run.
In the eighth, Farni walked the leadoff hitter and retired the second batter on a sacrifice bunt before giving way to Kirk Ingram.
Ingram was unable to register an out, walking the first two batters before giving up the game winning single.
Concordia got out to a slow start in the second game, stranding a runner on second in the first inning before leaving the bases loaded in the second and stranding another runner on second in the third.
The Peacocks, meanwhile, used a first inning solo home run to take a 1-0 lead through the first three frames.
That's when Concordia decided to take out their offensive aggression on the Peacocks, scoring 11 runs in the top of the fourth inning capped off by a three run triple by Greg Winegarden.
Mason Reinhart drilled a two run homer in the fifth inning, his second of the season.
The Peacocks did manage to get some runs back, but couldn't surmount the 11 run attack put on by the Bears.
Winegarden finished 5-5 with a run and five RBI while four other Bears recorded two hit games.
Schmidt earned the win, moving to 5-3 on the season with four three-hit innings. He allowed two runs, walked two and struck out three.
The Bears, who need to take three of four in the series to pass the Peacocks to earn a spot in the NSIC Tournament, will rematch in a doubleheader tomorrow at noon in their final regular season games.
