May. 09– Concordia freshman women's golfer Kelly Godwin shot a 78 on the first day of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships on Wednesday at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Fla. Godwin is currently in a four-way tie for 17th after the first round of the four round championship event that includes the top 48 women's golfers from Division II.
Godwin, who qualified for nationals as an individual after her third place finish at the NCAA North Central Regional, shot two birdies and 11 pars in the first round.
She started off the front nine hot with a birdie on the first hole. After back-to-back pars on the next two holes she was one under after three.
After a bogey on the fourth hole, Godwin went on to par the next four holes, posting an even par of 31 through the first eight holes of action. A double-bogey on nine but her at plus-two (38) through the front nine.
She remained at two over after a pair of pars on the 10th and 11th holes but miscued with a double-bogey on hole 12.
She fired her second birdie on the 13th hole (pictured right), a 461 yard par five that is protected by a water hazard near the green. She finished out her round with three more pars, a bogey and a double-bogey, firing a 40 on the back nine to finish the first round at 78, six over par.
Godwin tees-off tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. for her second round of competition. Only three strokes separate her from sixth place as 15 golfers are within three strokes and 21 are within four strokes of each other with five tied at 79 sitting one stroke behind Godwin's 78.
