May. 10– Freshman standout women's golfer Kelly Godwin improved her score by one stroke, firing a 77 on the second day of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships on Thursday at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Fla. Godwin's strong second round was not enough for her to move up in the standings, as she is currently in a three-way tie for 20th out of the top 48 women's golfers at the NCAA Division II level.
After two rounds, Godwin's score sits at a solid 155, one stroke out of 13th, three strokes out of 11th and five strokes back of being tied for sixth in what is still a tightly contested battle. There is currently a two-way tie atop the leaderboard between Florida Southern's Lindsey Bergeon and Daniela Iacobelli of Florida Tech.
Unlike her round yesterday, Godwin started slow on the front nine today, shooting back-to-back bogeys to open her first two holes. Bogeys on three of four holes from the fifth to the eighth put her at five over par before a ninth hole birdie on a 513 yard par five put her score at 40, plus-four on the front nine.
The back nine started off similar to the front nine as she bogeyed two of the first four holes to bump her score to six-over par. But Godwin rallied for a 14th hole birdie on a 341 yard par four and saved her round by shooting par on each of the final four holes. She fired a 37 (plus-one) on the back nine to finish plus-five, 77, for the afternoon.
With two rounds still to play, Godwin is just five strokes back of sixth place, however 16 others muddled either tied or ahead of her.
