Pray for Those Affected, Offer Comfort and Support

The Concordia community raises up its thoughts and prayers for all those affected by the collapse of the I35-W bridge.

As we continue to hear reports of injury and loss of life, close calls and acts of selfless heroism, we praise God that none of our campus community appears to have been injured in this tragic disaster even as we strive to offer care and support for those who have been directly involved.

After considering the effects of the bridge collapse on commuter access to the campus and related issues, the University has concluded that no change in class or work schedules will be required.

It is likely that a number of our Criminal Justice cohort students have been and will continue to be involved in emergency response efforts in the days and weeks ahead.

Likewise, many students traveling to cohorts on-campus and elsewhere throughout the city, may encounter difficulties with their commute to class.

We encourage faculty to be mindful of the unique circumstances this disaster may create and to offer your support in response to students' individual needs, whether it be an absence from an online chat session, extension of a deadline or other forms of assistance.

The bridge collapse has long-term consequences for commuters throughout the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has posted multiple options on its website to assist commuters, including detour routes, RideShare, light rail, bus, bike routes and more. We encourage employees and students to take advantage of these excellent resources if need arises.

Most of us have already seen or heard extensive media coverage of the disaster and feel moved to help. The City of Minneapolis encourages residents to offer support in two important ways.

First, donate blood. Because blood is a perishable commodity that is often in short supply and can only be obtained through donation, it truly is one of the most important gifts you can make.

To locate local blood donation sites, contact Memorial Blood Centers, 1-800-GIVEBLD, or the American Red Cross, 1-800-GIVELIFE (448-3543).

The Red Cross also welcomes financial donations to support its disaster response efforts, which provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disasters.

You can designate funds to victims of the bridge collapse at the time of your donation.

Please continue to keep all those affected by the disaster in your thoughts and prayers. Pray that God will continue to bless all those involved in the long recovery and rebuilding process that lies ahead.
