Academic Equity Specialist

Barbara B. Washington joined Concordia in Fall 2012 as Academic Equity Specialist faculty, bringing with her a wealth of expertise and experience in the area of urban teaching and administration. A Concordia graduate, Washington is a veteran urban educator of the St Paul Public School district (1974-2008). While serving in St Paul as an administrative leader, she designed and implemented the Urban Education Program which partnered with Concordia University and other Minnesota Colleges and Universities, the Minnesota Private College Fund, and the Minnesota State Department of Education to recruit, prepare, employ and induct teachers of color to become effective urban classroom teachers (1998–2007). Going on to serve as executive director for Hamline University’s Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching (2003-2006) and interim executive director for Metropolitan State University’s Urban Teacher Program (2010-2012), her focus on culturally relevant reflective teaching, critical pedagogy and urban education continues to provide students, faculty and staff with the opportunity to connect theory to practice.
