Congratulations to Dr. Dale Trapp, Ramsey Conservation District Outstanding Conservationist of the Year

Dr. Dale Trapp is an Earth Science professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at Concordia University, St. Paul. He and his science students have volunteered their time to maintain and improve a demonstration water quality protection project in St. Paul’s Lake Phalen Regional Park. The project, a three celled storm sewer retro-fit rainwater garden that was designed by and built with funding from the Ramsey Conservation District, treats impervious surface runoff previously draining directly into Phalen Lake.

Since July of 2006, Dr. Trapp and his students have contributed well-over 100 volunteer hours removing invasive weed species from the rainwater gardens and planted 1000 supplemental native plant species “plugs” in June 2007.  To date, this effort has saved the City of St. Paul nearly $2,000.00 in maintenance cost and has had the added benefits of introducing students/future conservationists to the science and technology of bio-infiltration water conservation practices and creating a partnership between Concordia University and the District.
