School-Age Care Certificate
This certificate consists of 12 undergraduate credits (for those who have graduated from high school, but have not attained a bachelor's degree) or 6 graduate credits (for those with a bachelor's degree who desire graduate credit).
There is a 45 minute time period one evening per week when the instructor and the students in the class meet in a chat room with the instructor and other students for a "live" conversation.
In between weekly chats, there are books and lectures to read, questions to answer, and assignments to complete. You can communicate with your instructor as needed through e-mail and telephone.
To earn the School-Age Care Certificate, students must successfully complete the following classes:
SAC300/600 Professional School Age Facilitator or Role of SAC (4 undergraduate/2 graduate credits) This course discusses the role of adults in school-age care and the effect they have on children. Societal change and the needs of today?s families and children will be explored. Also included will be how to evaluate a quality SAC site and identify areas for future improvement. This course is geared towards those working in the SAC field, and is not open to students in Concordia University?s School-Age Care BA program. This course can be taken separately or as part of the SAC Certificate.
SAC 320/620 Discipline and Self-Discipline (4 undergraduate/2 graduate credits) This course compares various discipline techniques and their short and long-term effects. How to identify at risk behaviors, support effective parenting practices, and link discipline concepts to school-age care theory will be covered. The key focus will be how to lead children towards healthy self-discipline and self-management. This course is geared towards those working in the SAC or childcare field and is part of the SAC Certificate.
SAC330/660 Conflict Resolution and Community Building (4 undergraduate/2 graduate credits) This course introduces the idea of community building through the teaching of friendship and non-violent conflict resolution skills. It will explore the role of perception and self-perception as it relates to a child?s behavior in a group, prioritize social skills for the child care setting, and identify the adult-child interactions that support social growth. This course is geared towards those working in the SAC or child care field and is part of the SAC Certificate.
