Drive to Learn Scholarship

The Drive to Learn Scholarship

Important Dates

Application Deadline: March 1st, 2014
Award Announcement: May 1st, 2014

General Program Information

Since our company's inception, Shift Insurance has aimed to change the way you think about insurance and now we aim to change the way you think about learning. Pursuing post-secondary education can provide us with important experiences that extend our knowledge and contribute to personal growth. However, there are also life experiences that occur outside the classroom that can offer bits of wisdom in our lives. Consider driving, for instance. The majority of the country’s population spends a good chunk of time behind the wheel and/or as passengers on a regular basis but how often do any of us seize the opportunity to reflect on these experiences?

Take a moment to think about your most memorable experiences—both good and bad—as a driver and/or a passenger. Whether or not you noticed it at the time, they probably helped you learn something about yourself, others, or life in general. Share your experiences with us and take advantage of our new scholarship opportunity! Shift Insurance is offering The Drive to Learn scholarship award to college students across the United States to honor the learning done in and outside of classroom walls. If you are currently a full-time student at a four-year university, graduate program, community college, or trade school, Shift Insurance wants to hear from you. Simply tell us about an important learning experience you had while on the road —either as a driver or a passenger—and you could receive $1000!

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Read the Terms and Conditions - Our full Terms and Conditions section must be read and agreed to in order to qualify for  the program.

  2. Full time student - Applicants must be enrolled full time (at least 12 undergraduate units or 6-9 graduate units) at a single educational institution located in the continental United States.

  3. Citizenship - U.S citizens and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply

  4. Response to Prompt - In 750-1000 words, prepare a written response that addresses ONE of the following prompts:

    1. Some of the best life-lessons are the ones we learn from our mistakes. Share a lesson you learned when facing the consequences of bad decision-making as a driver or a passenger. Describe the situation and explain how it led to a valuable learning experience.

    2. Learning how to drive is a different experience for everyone because some may find it easy to accomplish while others struggle with the challenge. Describe your experience. What did it take for you to become a confident driver? What valuable lesson(s) did you learn--about yourself, others, or life in general--during or after the process?

    3. You may have noticed that people tend to change over time. For example, you're probably not the same person you were as a freshman in high school. Think about the driver you were when you first obtained your driver's license. Maybe you were a young and reckless driver or perhaps a timid and careful driver. Now think about the driver you are today. Describe how you have changed as a driver. Does this transformation reflect changes in other aspects of your life (i.e. driving more carefully after a near-death experience, driving aggressively after losing your job, etc.)? If so, explain. Would you consider this transformation to your benefit or do you see it as a potential problem? Why?

    4. Although the vast majority of the country's population drives on a regular basis, there are still many people who do not. Are you one of them? What's keeping you from getting behind the wheel? Maybe the city you live in is not commuter-friendly, maybe you cannot afford to buy a car, or perhaps you simply choose not to drive. Describe your situation. Is this an obstacle for you? Why or why not? How has not driving influenced you and your life?

  5. Application Submission - Visit our scholarship application page and follow the directions for completing your submission. Applications must be received no later than 11:59pm PST on March 01, 2014.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Transfer Scholarship Lutheran Community Foundation

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship honors excellence by supporting outstanding community college students with financial need to transfer to and complete their bachelor’s degrees at the nation’s top four-year colleges and universities.

James Madison Fellowship

The James Madison Fellowship, a federal program, offers pre-service (as well as in-service) teachers of government and history up to $24,000 to complete a Master’s degree in fields related to the U.S. Constitution.  The program has awarded over 1200 fellowships since its inception in 1992.

Junior Fellows (those who have not yet taught) have two years to complete full-time graduate studies at any accredited college or university in the country.  In the past two decades, fellows have matriculated at nearly 400 colleges and universities around the nation.

After receiving their degree, Junior Fellows are required to teach in a secondary school for at least two years.  I am pleased to report, however, that the majority of our Junior Fellows choose to pursue career in teaching.  To date, over 2 million secondary students in all 50 states have been taught by James Madison Fellows.

The fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, but candidates only compete with candidates from within each state—not on a nation-wide basis.  Our goal is to award at least one James Madison Fellowship per year per state.  Full details of the fellowship as well as applications are available at the Madison Foundation’s website, http://jamesmadison.gov.  Applications are due each year on March 1.

Lexington Law Scholarship

Lexington Law, the trusted leader in helping people repair their credit reports understands the importance of financial planning and maintaining a great credit score, especially for college students. For this reason, the company is pleased to offer the “Lexington Law Scholarship Award” fund.

Affording college can be a challenge. With the increasing costs of tuition, books, housing, utilities, food, etc., students need all the help they can get. Sometimes that means taking out a loan or using a credit card to cover costs. Taking on debt may be unavoidable to complete an education, but students can learn to avoid harming their credit scores in the process.

Lexington Law is offering this scholarship to students in the United States who write an essay about what a credit score means to them, how they think they will use it in the future, and how they will maintain a good credit score during their college years. Lexington Law believes it is never too early to start thinking about your credit score and your credit report.

Amount: $10,000

Deadline: Sunday, August 31, 2014 at midnight.

Please visit Lexington Law and the following webpage for additional application instructions.
