Heginbotham Possibilities Lecture: Kao Kalia Yang

October 10, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Possibilities Lecture

Concordia University presents the annual Heginbotham Possibilities Lecture with speaker Kao Kalia Yang, author of The Late Homecomer, and the newly published The Song Poet, Monday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Buetow Auditorium.

The title of the lecture is “The World Within,” discussing how we are the product of different places, peoples, and possibilities.

In her most recent book, Yang writes about her father, a Hmong song poet who shared the stories of his people in the Land of the Million Elephants. Yang now shares the stories and songs he told her to encourage her and her sister in the new land of Minnesota. In The Late Homecomer, Kalia told the stories about her family’s past in Laos, in the Bin Vinai Refugee Camp in Thailand and in the poverty-filled projects of St. Paul. Her work provides poetic background for issues of immigration, refugees, Vietnam War History, education of speakers of other languages, and family.
