Derek Wise, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Dr. Wise enjoys teaching a wide range of mathematics courses, and developing students’ interests and skills in the mathematical sciences. He especially delights in involving math majors in research projects, through our mathematics seminar or independent studies. Drawing on a wide range of experience in both the mathematical sciences and teaching, he uses technology and a variety of modern pedagogical techniques to get students actively engaged in learning mathematics.
Before joining Concordia in 2015, Dr. Wise spent 8 years as a postdoc, first in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Davis, and then at both Theoretical Physics and Mathematics institutes at Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany. Earlier, he did computational and data analysis work in industry, and worked in large experimental physics collaborations. He has been teaching mathematics and physics since he was an undergraduate, in a range of roles: as lab instructor, trainer in industry, tutor, graduate teaching assistant, and professor.
