Dr. Matthew Buns
Assistant Professor of Kinesiology
Dr. Matthew Buns is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Health Science at Concordia University, St. Paul. Dr. Buns is also an assistant coach for Concordia’s cross country and track & field programs, primarily coaching middle and long distance runners. Prior to joining CSP’s faculty in 2015, Dr. Buns was an assistant professor of human performance at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
A 2004 graduate of Concordia University, Nebraska, he continued his education at Emporia State University where he earned a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in 2005. He received a Ph.D. in Kinesiology from Iowa State University in 2010. His teaching areas include physical education methods and motor development, learning, and control. His research in physical education and sport has focused on teaching and coaching behavior and expertise in motor skill.
While competing at Concordia University, Nebraska, he was a two-time NAIA All-American. During his coaching tenure, Buns has served as head or assistant coach at the high school, NJCAA, NAIA, and NCAA levels. Buns has published numerous scholarly articles in the field of track, cross country, and kinesiology and is the founding editor of the Track and Cross Country Journal. He also has made several presentations to state, regional and national audiences.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys boating, golfing, running, and is an avid Minnesota Timberwolves fan.
