Center for Hmong Studies Involved with TPT Documentary on Vietnam
TPT’s documentary, American’s Secret War: Minnesota Remembers Vietnam, a film based on the Hmong experience in Laos during the Vietnam War, featured a number of still images from CSP’s Center for Hmong Studies. Concordia alumnae Kaolee Vang (’11, M.A. ’15) who is employed by Twin Cities Public Television, was part of the production team for the film.
Students from CSP’s CHUSA Club (Concordia Hmong Unity Student Association) assisted with TPT’s special viewing and discussion event for the project Oct. 3. Lee Pao Xiong, Director of Hmong Studies at Concordia, served on the panel. Xiong said the Center for Hmong Studies involvement shows the importance of having this valuable resource to help share stories of the Hmong people.
“As the only Center for Hmong Studies in the world and with large archival collection of documents and photos about Hmong history, culture, and language, our expertise have always being sought by scholars, reporters, and researchers,” Xoing said. “The recent Secret War documentary film produced by TPT is just one of the many media outlets that utilized our knowledge, connections, and archival collections to enhance their productions.”
Xiong added TPT will air another documentary film in November titled Hmong Pioneers that prominently features CSP’s Center for Hmong Studies.
