With the ninth pick in the 14th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Oakland Athletics selected Concordia St. Paul junior right-hander Gus Varland.
As the 413th overall pick, Varland becomes the highest drafted player in program history, surpassing Bryan Lippincott, who was drafted in the 19th Round by the Washington Nationals in 2012. Concordia right-hander Jake Schmidt was also selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 41st Round in 2009, giving the Golden Bears three draft picks in the last 10 years. Varland was the 11th player from all of Division II selected in this year’s draft.
