Faculty Scholarship Accomplishments
Dr. Donald Helmstetter, Dean of the College of Education and Science, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education and Human Development at the University ofMinnesota. This award honors alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers and communities. Dr. Helmstetter is being honored as a “distinguished educator, administrator and passionate advocate for students and educators”.
Dr. Jeff Burkart, served as the keynote speaker and hymn festival leader in September for the Iowa West Regional Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) at Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa. In October he did the following: a two-part keynote presentation on The Gift of Lutheran Hymnody at the Minnesota North District of the LCMS’s pastor’s conference in Superior, Wis.; a workshop sponsored by Mission U from Lutheran Hour Ministries at Zion West Lutheran Church in Omaha, Neb.; the presentation of three sectionals at the Minnesota North and South District Education Conference in Mankato; the presentation of a live video webinar – Developing a Missionally-Minded Sunday School – in the Special Speaker’s Series of Lutheran Hour Ministries at Lutheran Hour Ministries headquarters in St. Louis, Mo. Additionally, Burkart’s new text for I Love toTell the Story was accepted for publication in 2013 for the One in Christ Kindergarten Religion curriculum from Concordia Publishing House.
Dr. Basma Ibrahim DeVries, served as the Local Team Conference Co-Chair for the national SIETAR-USA Conference (Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research), “Navigating Complexity in an Intercultural World.” She was an invited pre-conference Master Workshop facilitator, Navigating from the Inside Out: Trainer Tools Focused on Your Facilitation of Intercultural Activities, session presenter, Developing a Multifaceted,Participatory Program to Address Ethnocentrism and Racism on a “Conservative” Campus (with CSP co-presenters, Cheryl Chatman, DanHess, Chinh Truong, and Choua Vang), session presenter, All in theSame Boat – Literally!: Managing Intercultural Complexities on Deck of The Scholar Ship (with Jon DeVries and Greg Walker), and an invited panelist for the Local Chapter session as a result of co-founding and coordinating SIETAR-Minnesota, the most successful Local Chapter of SIETAR-USA. As Local Team Co-Chair, Basma was pleased to implement creative ways to showcase the history and diversity of cultures in Minnesota, including a full conference ‘Welcome to Minnesota – A Little Context’ presentation and coordinating a display of local photographer Wing Young Huie’s work.
Dr. Kim Flottemesch, Communication Studies, was awarded the “Distinguished Research Award” for her manuscript “Learning through narrative: The impact of digital storytelling on intergenerational relationships” presented at the Allied Academies InternationalConference- Division of Educational Leadership on Oct. 13, 2012.
