Pre-Licensure Nursing (BSN)Program Admission Requirements

Congratulations!

Congratulations on your acceptance to Concordia University, St. Paul! Now that you have been accepted to the university, the following items must be completed prior to your acceptance to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Phase 1: Nursing Admission Requirements

Prior to being accepted to the Pre-Licensure Nursing program please submit the following materials to the CSP Nursing Department:

Demonstrated English Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency via examination if (1) English is not their native language, and (2) the applicants have lived in the US fewer than eight years at the time of application.

Applicants are exempt from taking an English proficiency exam if their native language is English or they have been in the US, as a non-native English speaker, for more than eight years. English proficiency may be demonstrated by one or more of the following tests:

Test Minimum Satisfactory Score
TOEFL iBT (.pdf) 84 with a minimum speaking score of 26
IELTS Overall score of 6.5 with the minimum of 6.0 on all modules
MELAB (external site) Total passing score of 81 and a speaking section score of 3
Pearson Test of English Academic (.pdf) Overall score of 55 with the minimum of 50 on all sub-scores

These requirements are based on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing recommendations as published in the following studies:

Prerequisite Coursework

All prerequisite courses must have been completed in the past five years with a grade of ‘C’ or higher in order to count toward the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Biology I and General Chemistry I must have a combined GPA of 2.75 or greater.

  • Biology I (3-4 credits)*
  • General Chemistry I with lab (3-4 credits)
  • Anatomy and Physiology I (3-4 credits)
  • Anatomy and Physiology II (3-4 credits)
  • Introduction to Psychology (3-4 credits)

*Biology requisite would be met with successful completion (C or higher) of Microbiology and A&P I&II.

Two Letters of Recommendation
  • Letters should be completed by a professor or employer
  • Letters should state relationship to the applicant
  • Letters should state how or why the applicant will be successful in the Pre-Licensure BSN track
TEAS Scores

Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) must be submitted with a score of 62% or greater.

If TEAS Math score is below 63.3%, MAT 095 must be taken prior to MAT 165.

Nursing Assistant Documentation

Submit documentation of a successfully completed Nursing Assistant Course (no older than five years) OR a Nursing Assistant Registry document.

To obtain this document, go to the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry and download your document that contains an image of the state seal.

Nursing Goal Statement

Each applicant is required to submit a Nursing Goal Statement.  Please write on the following topics:

  • Explain what has led you to desire to become a nurse. Provide specific detail to support your explanation
  • Identify professional values that you possess that will enable you to contribute as a professional nurse.
  • Share how you feel Concordia University, St. Paul (CSP) will help you meet these goals

Ensure statements follow these guidelines:

  • The statement should fall between 400 and 700 words
  • Include a beginning (introduction), middle (body), and end (summary/conclusion)
  • To support the flow of the content, include transitions from one topic to another
  • Your statement should be original and reflective of you individually. Do not incorporate any other work requiring citation or referencing
  • Do not plagiarize
  • Review and edit your statement for spelling, grammar errors, and to assure that you have met the requirements detailed above

Phase II: Newly Accepted Nursing Student Requirements

Once accepted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, there are a numbers of items that will need to be completed prior to registering for your courses. The additional items are required to satisfy clinical agency requirements.

Once you have completed final steps in enrolling into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, the Nursing Department will notify you of your acceptance into the program.

Complete Your FAFSA

To apply for financial aid, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and choose Concordia University, St. Paul using the code 002347.
Approximately two weeks after submitting the FAFSA you will receive notification of your financial aid award package.

Attend Orientation

There is a half-day mandatory Nursing Orientation before the start of the semester for all students accepted to the Nursing program.  Time and date of the orientation will be communicated to you once you are accepted.
