2016 Bartling Lecture: Historian Frank M. White “Untold Stories of Black Baseball in Minnesota”
October 19, 2016 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 pm
Historian Frank M. White will to deliver the 2016 Bartling Lecture on Wednesday, October 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Buenger Education Center. White’s lecture topic will be: “They Played for the Love of the Game: Untold Stories of Black Baseball in Minnesota.”
A century before Kirby Puckett led the Twins to two world series titles, Minnesota was home to many talented African American baseball players. But for decades, Major League Baseball imposed a strict policy of segregation. Black ballplayers in Minnesota were relegated to semipro leagues, barnstorming clubs, and all-black teams—many of which are lost to history.
Frank W. White will speak about the history of these Minnesota ballplayers. While the stories expose racism, hardship, and segregation; they are highlighted by courageous athletes who persevered and were united by their love of the sport.
The Bartling History Lecture Series was successfully launched in 2011 with an inspiring speech by Dr. Fred Bartling himself who recounted his experiences as a pastor in the Deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights era and the impact it had on his life. The lecture series honors the former Concordia professor, who retired in 2010 after 50 years of service to CSP.
