CSP community,

It is with great sadness and the hope of the resurrection that I share with you the passing of Rev. Dr. Robert (Bob) Holst, H.S. ’54, J.C. ‘56, Concordia University, St. Paul’s eighth president, on May 12, 2026. I invite you to keep his wife, Lynne, as well as his three children and their families in your prayers as they grieve and celebrate his life and legacy.

Bob’s 20-year tenure at CSP was marked by tremendous growth. Concordia St. Paul moved from a college to a university, the number of students and academic programs increased, the student body became more diverse, and major campus additions—including the Gangelhoff Center, E.M. Pearson Theatre, Library Technology Center, Fandrei Center, Cross of Christ Fellowship Center, Residence Life Center, and Sea Foam Stadium—were added to serve students, the community, and the church. One of the most significant milestones during his leadership was CSP’s move to NCAA Division II, a major undertaking that Bob was especially proud to help guide and bring to fruition. These transformations put CSP on a stronger foundation that continues to this day.

In addition to his ministry amongst us at CSP, Bob served for five years as a missionary to the Ipili people of Papua New Guinea, a teaching assistant at Princeton University, and a faculty member at Concordia Senior College and Christ College (now Concordia University Irvine). His service to the church over nearly seven decades was remarkable!

Bob married Lynne Grabowski in 1960, and they were blessed with three children: Mark, Thomas, and Ruth. He is survived by Lynne, his children, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, extended family, and numerous colleagues, friends, and individuals touched by his ministry.

Information about Bob’s visitation and funeral are forthcoming as plans are finalized. We also plan to publish a fuller retrospective on his ministry and legacy at Concordia St. Paul in the coming days.

In Christ,

Brian L. Friedrich, President
